Halloween 2009!

We had a great Halloween. Kate was a princess and Taft was a dragon. Heath and I had planned to dress up as Mario and Luigi to go along with the theme, but we never got around to putting our costumes together. My sister Nycole and her hubby Scott came and spent the weekend with us.

We kicked off Halloween this year at the law school. They had an awesome Halloween party full of pizza, pop, and lots of trick-or-treating. On Halloween we went to our ward Halloween party were the kids did fishing and cookie decorating

Trip to the ER

What does one girl

+

one bed

+

one fall

=?

one broken collar bone!

Kate fell off her bed last night and broke her left collar bone.

The bad news-

  • they can’t put a cast on it so she gets to wear this beautiful sling for the next month or so.
  • She was signed up to start gymnastics in two weeks

The good news-

  • she is young enough that she should heal on her own and not need surgery

Chukars Game!

Back on July 31st we got to go to a Chukar’s game with my brothers. We enjoyed great seats, beautiful weather, and yummy pizza.
Taft LOVES pop along with other sugar drinksThe Chukar mascot was a little scary for Taft. I had to shove him into the Chukar’s arms and quickly snap my pictureKate got an authentic Chukar signature Taft scored the ball he is holding from the players on the bench in the background

Birthday Girl!

Yesterday was Kate’s 4th birthday! Where has the time gone? We had a fun day complete with chocolate chip pancakes topped with buttermilk syrup, a trip to the dollar store (to pick out any toy), homemade pizza, lots of presents and nothing other than pink cake and ice cream Four things about Kate:
1. She LOVES the color pink
2. She loves to dress up (she changes her outfit about three times a day)
3. She loves books and could listen to stories all day
4. She loves to do projects
The only thing Kate asked for was a her own pink camera

Law School Update

If you didn’t already know, we’re moving to Provo and I’m going to go to school at BYU.

BYU was always my default answer when anybody asked me where I wanted to go to law school. It was the easy answer since nobody ever asked why I wanted to go there. The truth is there were a lot of schools I wanted to go to. Because it was tax season and I didn’t have much time, Rachel and I ended up only being able to visit 3 schools: BYU, Washington University in St. Louis, and Iowa. I was really hoping that we would love one of the schools we visited, but we didn’t. In fact, as we were walking out of the BYU law building I was mentally crossing BYU off the list. The school seemed fine but was underwhelming. WUSTL was beautiful and I love St. Louis, but I couldn’t see myself going to school there. I liked Iowa. The city seemed nice, and the faculty members were extremely friendly. However, every apartment we looked at in our price range was an absolute dump, and the law students seemed a little on the snooty side. I didn’t feel good about choosing a school I hadn’t visited, so the choice really boiled down to BYU or Iowa. This was easily one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make. For the first time ever, I really started to feel homesick for the Midwest. I don’t think I realized when I left Missouri for college that there was a good chance I would never live there again. I really miss the place. Rachel, for the most part, left the school decision for me to deal with. She would have supported me in any decision, but I could tell she was holding back a dislike for the Midwest. We came close enough to choosing Iowa that we put down a deposit on an apartment there, and at the time, I felt 90% sure that’s where we were going to end up.

It wasn’t just the obvious reason of Rachel being happier in Provo that made me choose BYU. For one, BYU is a pretty safe investment. With tuition there being low, the pressure to maintain a scholarship is significantly lower. Also, I got the feeling that BYU is somewhat unique in that the school isn’t just trying to sell potential students on a law degree as a means to a high paying career. They see a legal career more as a calling and an opportunity for service. I also see BYU as the easiest school to make friends at, and hopefully that will help the next three years to be an enjoyable experience.

I’ve really come to feel that BYU is the best school for us, and I hope that it leads me into a job that I can really be satisfied doing. School starts mid August. Since neither one of us is familiar with Povo, we decided to play it safe and move into Wymount which offers month-to-month lease contracts.
